St. Sofia Golf Club visit Delights the Designer Paul McGinley
Paul McGinley, European Tour and Ryder Cup golfer visited St. Sofia Golf Club from Friday 15th to Sunday 17th April 2011. Paul spent a weekend reviewing his redesign of the course including the completed front nine holes and the advanced works on the back nine. Asked was he pleased with what he saw during the visit, Paul said: “ The works completed are magnificent, Golf Balkan's shapers and construction team have build exactly what I have designed”. Paul spent over ten hours on Saturday walking every square metre of the course and he couldn't hide his delight in what he saw. Paul was joined by Mr. Krassimir Guergov early on Saturday and spent the day reviewing the maps and walking the course with him. Mr. Guergov made a valuable contribution to the green designs showing his experience in the reading topographic maps and contours. Paul commented: “The re-design is going as scheduled and only for the very poor winter weather which struck much of Europe, I would have been viewing the completed course”. Paul does not anticipated problems to occur and he believes the re-design construction works are completed by late June. “Having played many of the world's top golf courses, I can safely say the construction works are comparable with the best I have ever seen, great praise indeed for the Golf Balkan team”.Added to this a brand new high specification irrigation system has been installed and Paul sees this as vital to grow the grass and provide top quality playing surfaces. Of course the million dollar question is when will Bulgarian golfers be able to play at St. Sofia again? With a little help from Mother Nature and the expertise that Golf Balkan will provide for the growing-in, golfers should have the front nine holes to play in the autumn 2011. Like the front nine, it is best that the back nine gets one winter to settle in and by May 2012 the golf course will be fully open.
Paul has been very mindful of the fact that St. Sofia Golf Club & SPA is the only facility of its kind in Sofia. “It is vital that the course is renovated to provide a top quality course to enhance this large European capital city”, Paul added. “I have changed the features of the landscape and transformed the site into golf course which will test golfers of every ability.” “Each of the golf holes now has its own unique and natural character and has been framed with individual features like lakes, streams, mounding and bunkering. New greens and tees have been re-designed and built to United States Golf Association (USGA) standard”, Paul explained. A full drainage and irrigation system has been incorporated into the project and an intensive tree planting and landscape plan will complete the course. After visiting the golf course Paul as always enjoyed his time in the great restaurants and nightlife around Sofia City. “The next time I visit, the grass will be growing on the greens and the course, which is very exciting”, said Paul as he departed for the airport and a series of flights to his next tournament, the China Open. “GOLF & SPA”

The first stage of the reconstruction of St. Sofia Golf Course is completed. The second nine holes are being reconstructed - 13-th, 14-th, 15-th and 16-th green are rough shaped, drainage is installed on 17-th green, 11-th and 12-th green are spread with sand, 10-th and 18-th green and tees are seeded. What is more, the Pump station is completed and ready to be used, the edge of the lake is shaped. The irrigation system is operational on holes 10, 11, 13, 17 and 18. All the tees, bunkers and rough zones are shaped. The main drainage is installed on holes 11, 12 and 17.
